Raleigh’s annual arts festival — Artsplosure — is back this weekend, Oct. 9-10, after a ~2 year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, visitors can expect 2 days of live music, food trucks, beer stands, art installations, children’s activities, and over 175 artists selling artwork at the art market in Downtown Raleigh.
There will be 2 stages (1 at City Plaza and 1 on Morgan Street in front of the Capitol Building), featuring performances from NC artists Libby Rodenbough, T. Gold, and Dissimilar South. Click here for the full lineup.
“Artsplosure's mission of ‘art for all’ is at the core of community connection,” Lucy Tobias, Marketing Director of Artsplosure, said. “This weekend's namesake festival offers a physical space for residents + visitors to come together and support art in an engaging, fun way for the whole family.”
The Song Confessional, one of the festival's interactive installations, will be open to the public throughout the weekend. Festival goers can anonymously share a confession or personal story at the installation’s trailer + musicians Walker Lukens and Zac Catanzaro will turn confessions into original songs.
Other experiences include the 2021 Congressional Art Competition collection — a display of 6 out of the 8 pieces recognized for excellence — and Kidsplosure, an arts festival for kids.
We asked Lucy what she’s most excited for and she said, “I can't wait for all of the music! We consider ourselves a ‘discovery festival’ where we curate our emerging singers + songwriters. You can experience a performer here at the festival, and in the next year or so, they could be performing at the Grammys or selling out Madison Square Garden.”
Artsplosure activities kicks off at 11 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 9 + is free to the public.

- The trail access point and parking area at 4000 Lindsay Dr. will be closed until late 2023 as construction begins on the Crabtree Creek West Trail starting Mon., Oct. 11. The trail will be approx. 2 miles in length + extend from Lindsay Drive to the eastern boundary of Umstead Park. 🌳

- Downtown Raleigh Alliance is now accepting applications for Pop-Up Shops at Martin Street — a program for minority and women-owned businesses looking to share affordable retail space + and test their merchandise on the Downtown storefront market. Applications are due by Tues., Oct. 19 at 5 p.m.

StrideBio, a gene therapy company based in RTP, is expanding as it prepares to move its program into clinical trials. The company, partly founded by Duke University professor Aravind Asokan, recently hired its 100th employee + has added 15,000 sqft of laboratory and office space. (Triangle Business Journal)

- Union Station Plaza will soon be transformed into an outdoor coworking space. From Oct. 11-22, Downtown Raleigh Alliance is converting the space for Outdoor Office + will provide open seating, meeting areas, and high speed Wi-Fi. Individual working tables are first-come, first-serve, while small group meeting tables can be reserved. 💻
Development
- Raleigh City Council approved a rezoning request allowing up to 12 stories of mixed-use development for the future headquarters of the NC Dept. of Health and Human Resources. Plans call for 480,920 sqft of office space + a parking deck. 🏢 (Triangle Business Journal)

- The Wake County Public School System and Wake Technical Community College are partnering to open Morrisville’s first public high school. The early college will be located on Wake Tech’s RTP campus + allow students to graduate with up to 2 years of college credit. 📚(The News & Observer)

- The NC State Fair is opening on Thurs., Oct 14 + coming with it are new fair foods to explore. Fair goers can now find Chef D’Lites’ Atomic Tots and Arepa Loca’s pork stuffed arepas called La Sureña (The Crazy Southerner). Other options include cornbread funnel cakes + lobster on a stick.
