Hello Wednesday.
April 24 2024
Walktober is here + the City of Raleigh — in partnership with Commute Smart Raleigh — is hosting a number of events to promote health, exercise, and pedestrian safety.
Did you know Raleigh is the 47th most walkable large city in the US? Raleigh’s walk score is 31 (aka: the measure of walkability in a city). The most walkable Raleigh neighborhoods are College Park, Oakwood + Stonehenge East.

Commute Smart Raleigh is encouraging commuters who live within 1 or 2 miles of their workplace to walk to work. In this video, they give safety tips for walking — like wearing bright colors or reflective gear + looking both ways before using a crosswalk.
Want to learn more? The city is hosting a virtual Walking and Biking Safety Summit today, Oct. 15 from 1-4 p.m. The summit features Angie Schmitt, who will talk about lessons learned in her book "RIGHT OF WAY: Race, Class, and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America.”
Raleigh also offers multiple free walking clubs for community members, including Chavis Center Walking Club (ages 16+) every Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Worthdale Walkers Club (ages 50+) every Thursday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
If you’d rather walk at your own speed, the Capital Area Greenway system has 100+ miles of trails to explore. Discover them here.

The opening of Exquisite Creatures: The Art of Christopher Marley on Sat., Oct. 16 marks the return of special exhibitions at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences — it’s the first in 3 years.
Exquisite Creatures is a collection of 350 stunning three-dimensional displays of rare organisms from all over the world. Featuring creatures from globe-bearing treehoppers and red-eyed treefrogs to reef sharks and black cobras, the pieces celebrate the conjunction of art, science, and nature. Christopher Marley’s work helps attendees see nature in a way that is beautifully diverse but still unified by biophilia, aka the “love of life.”
Here’s what to look out for while visiting the exhibition:
1. Symmetry

Marley’s use of symmetry is shown throughout his work, including in the piece “Lighting,” which was created using the carapace of beetles.
2. Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. Marley shows this in different works of art, like “Pisces,” which showcases different species of reef fish and sea life.
