- The 2021 Summer Olympics are coming up, but you don’t have to go all the way to Tokyo to compete this year. Raleigh Beer Garden is hosting its first ever Beer Olympics on Sun., July 18 starting at 1 p.m. Participation is $60 per team, includes a free beer per person, and gives you the chance to win prizes + a trophy. 🍻
- Bond Brothers Beer Company is bringing back its World’s Largest Flip Flop 1K Walk tomorrow, July 17 at 10:30 a.m at their 202 E. Cedar St. location. Yep, you read that right, it’s a 1K walk in flip flops. This year’s event is benefitting children in the Wake County Holiday Cheer Program. Registration is $25 + closes tomorrow.🩴

- Downtown Raleigh Alliance announced the date for this year’s State of Downtown event. Held in the Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts, it will feature speeches by individuals from different industries + a market analysis of last year. The program starts at 3:30 p.m., with a reception preceding it at 2:30 p.m. Register here.

- If you needed a reminder today to never give up, here it is. After CityPlat’s Nikita Zhitov spent 17 years writing letters to the owner of the 3-story building at 1213-1217 Hillsborough St., it was finally sold for $2.6 million. CityPlat plans to renovate the multiplex, located near historic Cameron Park. (Triangle Business Journal)

- The Kids Exchange Consignment Sale is in town today, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m and is expected to be a big one. The sale is in the Jim Graham Building at the NC State Fairgrounds located at 1025 Blue Ridge Rd. There will be tables filled with deals on clothing, toys + more. (CBS 17)

- Construction begins next week for a new path connecting Reedy Creek + Rocky Branch trail — called the Gorman Street Connector. The path will ensure safety for cyclists, runners, and walkers, allowing them 10 ft of space on Gorman Street, Hillsborough Street, and Sullivan Drive. (The News & Observer)
- Raleigh Parks just got greener. In an effort to improve sustainability practices, they’re switching to electric maintenance equipment. The tools will help with costs, fuel consumption, noise + air pollution.

- A Place at the Table is partnering with Wake Tech to offer free, 6-8 week-long hospitality training at the restaurant (in the Warehouse District). Classes include basic culinary arts, barista & cafe training + artisan bread baking. They will be offered in the evenings + lead to industry certifications. Register here. 🥐

- NC State researchers have made mosquito-resistant clothing using textile material that they developed to be bite-proof. How do they know it’s bite-proof? A volunteer wore their clothing in a cage with 200 live mosquitoes. Startup Vector Textiles has now licensed the patent rights + plans to sell clothing commercially. (TechWire)
- Raleigh's VitalFlo raised $2.14 million in its latest seed round. The company — which uses a medical testing device + technology to improve care for patients with lung and respiratory issues — grew its patient load by 17 times during the last year. It plans to use the funds to scale and add to its team. (TechWire)

- Kerwin Pittman is the creator behind the nonprofit Recidivism Reduction Educational Program Services. Alongside Red Hat, Smith-Anderson Law Firm, and Meredith College, the new program will educate + train former inmates who will leave the no-cost program as paralegals and have better access to jobs. (ABC 11)

- Wendell Murphy, a 1960 graduate of NC State, is being recognized for his contributions to NC sports as the recipient of the inaugural Don Fish NC Sports Hall of Fame Legacy Award. Wendell helped obtain the funding for Carter-Finley stadium + NC State’s football facility is now named after him. (The News & Observer)

- A 39-year-old NC man received a successful, new-generation artificial heart implant from Duke University Hospital Monday. The surgery made the hospital the first in North America to perform the procedure. Learn more about the artificial heart here.
