An international art exhibition just landed in Dorothea Dix Park — Wings of the City, by world-renowned Mexican artist Jorge Marín, will be on display through March 2022.

The exhibition began its international journey in 2013, and has now traveled to over 20 cities. For the first time, the Raleigh display features dialogue that includes the Mexican Indigenous language, Purépecha.
The traveling collection of 9 bronze sculptures has flown all over the world — including to cities like Dubai, Istanbul + most recently our sister market city of Greenville, SC. Don’t worry GVLtoday, we’ll take good care of the wings.
To celebrate the exhibition’s arrival, Dix Park is hosting a Wings of the City Opening Event on Sat., Oct. 9 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Community members are invited to walk or bike along the exhibit route to see the sculptures in person, while celebrating Mexican culture with art, live music + food trucks. Pro tip: Sections of Umstead Drive and South Boylan Avenue in the park will be closed for pedestrians to move about.

“Through the work of Jorge Marín we seek to generate a social impact and connect with the cultural heritage of the environment that surrounds it,” Elena Catalán, Director of the Jorge Marín Foundation, said in a press release.
“With Wings of the City we propose, above all, to join the dialogue between contemporary Mexican art and the rich and heterogeneous population of the city of Raleigh,” she stated.
A partnership between the City of Raleigh, the Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh, the Jorge Marín Foundation, and the Dix Park Conservancy made the installation possible.
We don’t know about y’all, but this exhibition sure does make us feel First in Flight. ✈️
