Weather

Health 

• A new state-operated COVID-19 testing site opened yesterday at Highland Baptist Church, located at 8524 Crowder Rd. The location will be open Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. until Feb. 4. Register here. 
• Raleighites can now pick up free N95 masks at various locations in Wake County. The Wake County Human Services Center (5809 Departure Dr.) was added this week as a new pick-up location and is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The Public Health Center (10 Sunnybrook Rd.) has also restocked its supply. More information here. 

Canceled

• Topgolf canceled its Live Stadium Tour pop-up at UNC’s Kenan Memorial Stadium due to a staffing shortage. Toptracer, the technology and software used for the Topgolf Live experience, was unable to provide enough staff specialists for the March event. Those who already purchased tickets will receive a refund and a $20 Topgolf credit. 

Cause

• Service Raleigh, an annual city-wide day of service, is on April 9. Volunteer and site leader registration is now open. For the entire day, volunteers around the community will undertake various projects to provide assistance to local organizations. DYK: Service Raleigh was started by NC State’s Student Government and Park Scholars in 1998.

Edu

• The Wake County school board will meet today to discuss how to fill District 4's seat vacancy after Craston Artis II withdrew his appointment. The application process will likely be reopened to fill this role serving East Raleigh Schools. (The News & Observer) 

Arts

• A new mural by RapCaviar + Spotify honoring modern rap legends was recently completed downtown. “The Mount Rapmore of the 2010s” — located at 416 S. Dawson St. — features Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. 🎨

Learn

• The NC Museum of Natural Sciences + the Raleigh Astronomy Club are hosting Astronomy Days now through Sun., Jan. 30. During this virtual event themed around Venus, space-lovers of all ages can choose to attend various programs featuring rockets, exoplanets, telescopes + more. 

Trending 

• Zachary Keesee, an NC State alum living in Durham, posted a TikTok video of Switzerland and intentionally mislabeled the location as Gastonia, NC. Floridian Olivia Garcia didn’t realize the video was one of Keesee’s “Not Carolina” videos — so she drove to Gastonia to check out the views. There were no snowy mountains. 🚗  (The News & Observer)
